Harriet the Hungry Caterpillar.

This is Harriet.

She was a very hungry caterpillar.

While she was preparing to create her chrysalis,

she had to lose half her body weight.

(Hense her pooping all over my table.)

What I found the next morning!

This is what I found this morning, her chrysalis had become completely transparent.

I just happened to be walking by her when I saw this little body crawling out of her former home!

It was so amazing to see.

Here she is getting some air, followed by the second pair being extended.

Harriet it currently hanging out in my living room letting her wings dry.

What an amazing experience.

I'll be sad to let her go.

Sunshine and Spray August.

Every day I try to roll at least one roll of tape.

Not as if this is an obligation or goal,

it is the way that I unwind everyday.

It's my meditation.

I wait until I have about eight sculptures or more done,

and then I spray and glue them all at once.

These sculptures you see here are some of the last few

that I will have time to create before my first show

in September at Julian's Restaurant!

More details will be provided next week.

Table Topper.

A project for a tired eye.

An inspirational kitchen table.

The blank canvas.

When I am trying to portray a mood or a feel, I'm a firm believer in "go big or go home."

This table is supposed to reflect me, things I love and want to be surrounded with...

so naturally, it's gonna be loud.

This is the table cloth I chose.

BRIGHT, loud and playful. The perfect under painting.

These are the elements that I wanted to blend into my plant collection.

These are all treasures I hold dear to my heart, that I wanted on display on my kitchen table.

Some may ask, "Why your kitchen table?" (Along with my roommates because they are wondering where they are supposed to eat).

My defense is, you can't help where the sun shines in your apartment!

So, we will dine with the plants! :)

A huge advantage in having a brightly lit area to make plants happy?

BUY REFLECTIVE ANYTHING. (Like you see above).

This little Marshall's $10 buy, not only matched the table cloth,

but looks STUNNING during magic hour when the sun is setting.

My favorite time of day.

HERE you can see some dish-ware I have had for quite sometime.

It is a transparent green dish, that is not used as much for dining as I would like.

if I can teach you anything on my blog its this..

PLEASE don't let the understood use of a known object restrict you from seeing the range of it's possibilities.

The beautiful dish, flipped upside down served as a cohesive element to elevate the focal point of the table display.

From here (the top right of the composition), I started to build.

The left hand side, these two decretive elements are something I highly recommend.

The Bud Vase.

Why? Because they are interesting on their own without floral in them. Easy either way.

Surprise guests coming over last minute and you want to spruce your place up on a low budget? (Look great with sparse floral).

Or..

Budget too tight for floral money in your home/apartment?

This is what I do.

I put a dried arrangement into the vases.

Similar to a picture, I used dried flowers to remember an event or moment I want to carry with me.

I let the live product hang upside down on my wall until completely dried, to then use as an interchangeable decretive element.

These were flowers I bought myself the first week I moved into my new apartment last year.

I have 5 bouquets hanging in my room currently.

This little section is one of my first Brimfield finds of the July session.

Here you see a wooden element I purchased with three holes.

It's purpose,

serve Fiestaware dish-ware on this element to your guests.

I picked 2 up.

One for a plant stand, the other for a tape sculpture.

This is another Brimfield buy. A chartreuse green bud vase, by the Fiestaware company.

Holding an air plant of mine (so cool, easy to take care of, and they come in tons of varieties).

Lots of love and stories in this collective group of things.

This white bust is a new phase of mine.

When antiquing etc, I have been drawn to the human figure.. especially bust forms.

One of my favorite Art Deco stores is located in North Kingstown, RI. Once a month I will pop in and see what they have been up to.

When I saw this white bust, I fell in love.

My brother surprised me with it for my birthday last April.

I think it is important to express yourself in your living space.

While decor is an obvious expression, your living habits can be very telling.

Do yourself a favor and buy a living thing.

Plants can be the most therapeutic experience.

Learn what it likes and what it wants.

How they grow and blossom is the most fascinating and rewarding feeling.

In my mind, they deserve the kitchen table :)

The Best Designer of All.

With my new line of work,

I couldn't help but post some pictures that I have inspired the hell out of me.

Mother Nature,

The best designer of all.

Every day, I go into work and am BLOW AWAY by what is being brought into the stores.

I am surrounded by such beauty at all times,

I ask myself DAILY,

How am I so lucky to be surrounded by this and get paid?

MUST be Karma.

I count my blessings everyday, and I can't help but be so inspired by such effortless beauty.

So easy to live in the moment at work,

to stop and simply appreciate how something so amazing was made out of the dirt.

The day I forget to be thankful for these blessings, I will need a slap.

But for now,

I love my job.

July Brimfield BANDIT.

It was hot.

I was melting.

But I walked away a winner.

Brimfield 2011, Round 2.

Here is what I saw.

A beautifully mosaic tile with glass fired at a low enough temperature to adhere the glass to the tile, but not hot enough to make it melt completely.

The colors ranged from a royal blue to a cadmium yellow.

My current obsession of the moment, been spotting them a lot lately.

These porcelain hands were used as molds when sewing leather gloves.

They range in all sizes and styles, I'm still looking for the perfect one to add sticking out of a planting one day.

Forget having these things holding my jewelry, I would need 20.

Indian spice bowls. Beautifully painted, all using a deep red accent. Very alluring.

Another big trend I spotted during the July round were old tin tiles used for ceilings. As you can see above, all of the styles were available as if they were records, overwhelming you with character.

Below you can see how the larger found panels were then changed into a hang able piece of artwork, supports and wire attached to the back. These would be gorgeous if done in a high to low light area (SHADOWS!).

Was not crazy about the mirrors. Used the tins as the frame to a full length or wall mirror.

A little tacky for me.

I will always, always, be a sucker for Amber lighting.

Frogs in all shapes and sizes!

I have seen these used in many ways, but being used as a toothpick holder or a flower vase are my favorite.

THIS WAS THE SHOW STOPPER FOR ME.

First of all. Wow.

The colors, the movement, the character, the drama, the shape. I NEEDED it.

The owner told me that it was an old movie panel, made to dress up the sides of the screen before and after showings.

Below is the other 3/4.

But I really just liked it as a 1/4. Much more drama.

If I had the $300 for it and a way to get that huge thing home, I would have put it on it's side horizontally and had it running down my hallway.

Amazing.

I walked away from Brimfield this year with 4 large boxes for my new tape project (it's a big deal!!!), a six foot tall white iron and glass shelved plant stand for my new apartment, and a tiny Fiesta ware chartreuse flower vase.

For $90.

Colors of the Month: June/July.

In a previous post, you will see that I have shared a picture similar to these before.

I have decided to conduct an experiment.

I decided that once a month I would take an Aura Picture,

to see how I am changing spiritually for a year (maybe this is an ongoing project).

While I would go into great detail about what the colors mean as I had done prior,

I believe that they are also up to your own personal interpretation.

Colors mean and represent different things to different people.

And although, these pictures came with color definitions... I like what I see without reading what it means.

I have three pictures and it is so interesting

to see the transition thus far.

The woman who read my picture after was shocked by how strong my Aura was.

It's getting stronger, as you can see, you can barely see my face.

With every month, I feel as if I am growing more and more into the young woman and artist I have always wanted to be.

LA on my Mind.

It had been almost two years since

I had seen my best friend from college, Ada.

Looking for an adventure, I booked a flight to LA for a visit during the 4th of July long weekend.

I'll never forget it.

The Venice Beach fortune teller, brought me good news.

On the other hand, he told Ada she was a loud mouth.

(To be honest, I think it mixed us up).

I had my first "In and Out" burger.

I fell in love.

You can not put a price on friendship.

It was such an unforgettable and inspirational whirlwind, and I can only hope this was the first trip of many.

Thanks for the memories little Ada Maria, love you.

Sarah Wanna Doodle All Day: June.

Here are some snippets of some doodles

that have been created the past month or so.

Not as much as I'd like, but I'm drawing again and that's all that matters to me!!

I tend to stick to black fountain pen with slightly distorted line drawings, complimented by shadowing and funky ornament.

I like to study objects for minutes at a time, see the shapes and the shadows that they are made of, and then draw them without reference to create a completely unique look.

I also use fonts as a huge part of my thought process.

Believe it or not, if I don't feel stimulated reading font, I don't want to read it at all.

In my sketchbooks, most of my "to-do" lists and thoughts are written in an interesting way, or else I will completely ignore them all together.

I can't help but feel like with all of the gifts I have been given in this lifetime,

I have whatever I could ever desire right at my fingertips.

My imagery of my sketches and fonts often relate to my current state of mind.

If you are a doodler and a sketchbook keeper, do yourself a favor and

DATE EVERYTHING.

You'll be so happy you did.

Plus, it's really fun to look back and see where you were, mentally, stylistically and skill wise.

The last image is of my latest obsession, MY NEW APARTMENT.

I move in September 1st,

which is light years away for me since it's all I think about!

But in the meantime as you can see I have been sketching my antique pieces I have been collecting, and figuring out where I could see them fitting.

In the next few weeks I think I might do a post on some of the finds I have scored (you have all seen my 1950's record player),

I love them all!

And the sketches will only get more intense.

Can't wait until September.

What do all of these photos have in common?

They remind me of my grandmother.

One of my biggest lessons in this lifetime.

Lately I can't help but be consumed by the thoughts her memory, and all the ways she had inspired me.

Not to get too corny or sentimental, but my thoughts of her have been my main source of inspiration lately.

It's amazing to think of all of the ways in which she inspired me in this lifetime. Both as a granddaughter and as an artist.

Her presence and her passing was a gift, and she truly touched my heart, my mind and my soul.

She was a world traveler, a mother of 6, grandmother of 18 and one hell of a fighter.

She showed me how to have the most fun with the simple things in life, and always believed in the handwritten letter.

I'll never forget her handwriting.

Making peace with her memory will take years, for her existence was complicated.

But through my grieving, she is right here with me, still reminding me that no matter what...

You always be a flirt, because it keeps you young :)

Oh the many fish in the sea.

Other than my occasional doodles in my sketchbooks,

I can't honestly remember the last finalized illustration I have completed.

It had been too long.

I always like to take advantage of special occasions to become inspired to create something from scratch.

My boyfriend's birthday was last week,

and every birthday for part of his gift I always draw something for him.

Evan is a sailor, and lover of the sea.

I thought this would be a fun opportunity to illustrate some funny/demented fish (my favorite type!).

This was the final illustration.

Don't mind the triangle fish farting. I couldn't help myself.

All of his gifts wrapped up and ready to go :)

Great to be illustrating again.

One of the many steps I need to take while preparing a tape sculpture is the gluing and spraying.

I cannot emphasize enough how important this part is..

after all if I don't spray the tape, you got yourself a big ol' dust ball.

Sometimes it's hard to find the time to lug all my crap outside and get these beauties all put together, but when I do..

I'm in my own little world.

Sometimes I'll have music, sometimes friends.. but most times,

I just like to work in silence and listen to everything around me.

It was so beautiful outside today, I just couldn't resist.

One of these days I'll get my act together and get these all up on Etsy, ready for some new homes!

A Birth Gift.

A few years ago, a family heirloom surfaced,

and caught my immediate attention.

As a birth gift for my father, my grandparents bought a 1950's german Telefunken Sonata console.

Over time, it wasn't provided proper care and slowly moved its way into family's basements to be forgotten about.

When the Sonata made it's way back to my house through chance, I fell in love.

The inside wiring had been eaten away by mice, the wood finish was chipping off with glaring missing areas and the fabric on the front was water stained.

But all I could see was it's potential.

My mother suggested gutting it and turning it into a planter. I shuttered at the thought of destroying this amazing piece of history.. even though it was a good idea.

I researched online for weeks trying to see if I could get this restored. I just couldn't see it go to waste another minute.

I located one of two men in the country that could restore a dinosaur such as the Sonata, one luckily happened to reside in Connecticut.. a days drive away.

He was blown away by the piece.

After an hour explanation about the history and the construction (the man loved him some radios), he ended the conversation saying, "They just don't make stuff like this anymore. Once this machine is restored, it will outlive us all."

Crazy to think about.

This is one of my treasured possessions.

It's history, it's story and longevity makes me smile.

I knew I was responsible for giving it another lifetime, and I look forward to enjoying her for many years to come.

The Magic Hour.

My favorite time of day, the magic hour.

Right when the sun decides it's time to call it quits for the day and starts to set, is where I find the most beauty in my surroundings.

The intense sunlight juxtaposed by the extreme shadows... you couldn't create that unintentional beauty if you tried.

The magic hour makes me live in the now. You can't help but stop and appreciate what is being given to you.

I like to think of it as the sunlight's last goodbye until tomorrow.

Almost like a, "Here is ALL of this beauty, I hope it can hold you over until sunrise."

Looked outside to appreciate the shadows and I spotted this lone pink bud wanting to be noticed.

It made me smile.

This is my dog Millie. She is chubby and LOVES to nap. Also, she has a talent for finding the one sunny spot in the house. I'm always aware of her during these times, in hopes of getting a perfect reference picture of her in the sunny moment to later illustrate.

Magic hour, BEAUTIFYING a wall installation I did in my apartment. The morning light and afternoon light in my kitchen makes this clustering irresistible.

I try to describe to art buyers of this vision, but it's impossible to describe it's simple beauty.

A beautiful shadow that my shoes were casting one afternoon. I walked up the stairs and found this AMAZING photo.

This post is so important to me because it's a huge lesson for all of us to learn. If you are aware of your surroundings and if you stay awake, you will be OVERWHELMED with all of the gifts we are given everyday.

Be on the lookout this sundown, you might find something that takes your breath away.

Brimfield 2011.

Spring is slowly presenting itself in New England,

and you know what May means in Massachusetts...

Brimfield.

My favorite time of year, it was like Christmas.

Football fields and football fields full of old treasures waiting to be discovered!

Bakelite Bracelets (MY FAV, just VERY $$). The colors and the simplicity have always been attractive qualities for me.

Piano Guts, I loved the texture and the repetition of form. Would love to see this used in a cool way.

The very interesting textured blocks are actually old wallpaper print blocks.

My mother was digging through the blocks looking for inspiration for her ceramics. Such cool, interesting textures.

I really wanted to turn this architectural piece into a mirror. Always looking for interesting spaces to turn into an alternative use. Plus mirrors and lighting are always a source of attraction for me.

So I walked away with four boxes for my tape sculptures this year, and I couldn't be happier. I am always looking for interesting shapes to work within, and I found some goodies.

I will post the boxes later as I work on them, so keep a look out!

A Moment of Clarity.

Saturday afternoon in Wickford, Rhode Island.

Quick stop into the "Grateful Heart" on W Main St in Wickford.

What is this creepy picture you may ask?

It's an Aura picture.

In this holistic treasure, you sit in front of the aura camera, close your eyes and place both hands on the sensors. After ten seconds, a picture is developed and it reveals your current state of mind.

As most of you may know, I am going through a career transition right now. I have been fortunate enough to have a week to be able to get in touch with myself and my current state of mind.

I figured this would be a great time to determine where I stood emotionally and spiritually.

Violet: is a color of inner vision. It is a color that shows a blending of the heart and mind, the physical and spiritual. It reflects independence and intuition. It indicates an ability to be practical and worldly.

Blue: is a color of communication. It reflects calm and quietness. It can indicate the ability for telepathy.

(lighter blues) reflect an active imagination and good intuition.

(royal blue) indicates honesty and good judgement and can also indicate that the person has found or is about to find his or her chosen work.

Phew, how refreshing, and all is well in my mind.

I am going to try to take one a month to see my transition, keep checking in.

I highly recommend experiencing this, they can be truly informative and assist in personal growth.

My Life's Lesson, well one of them.

I believe that we all have lessons to learn in this lifetime, but all in all, there is always one lesson that dominates over the rest.

For me?

PATIENCE.

What is it for you?

I have been known to spend the majority of (CERTAIN) days FRUSTRATED, AGGRAVATED, and LOST with a current situation.

Why?

Because my lesson in life is to find the beauty in the

HERE

the

RIGHT NOW.

Don't judge, it's a lot harder than you would think.

I was searching for an answer, something to provide me solace, or even an inclination that it's all going to be ok...

and then I found this.

You can find this writing in any space of mine.

It just does it for me.

So when you want to know why you are where you are, and you want it to change..

keep reminding yourself you are where you are for a reason,

and you haven't learned all that you are meant as of yet.

Sucks right?

I know.

Do yourself a favor and when you find yourself in that position, read this to yourself.

You'll be glad you did.

Dale Chihuly and a Mother Daughter Day.

This past Sunday, I wanted to do something special with my mother.

I had heard that the Dale Chihuly exhibit at the MFA in Boston was supposed to be unbelievable.

That was an extreme understatement.

From the moment I walked in I was scraping my jaw off of the ground, with my eyes SO WIDE trying to take it all in.

I was so inspired by Chihuly and his use of space, light and color.

In his artist statement he proclaims,

"I never met a color I didn't like"

His work clearly was a reflection of this notion,

while your eyes FEASTED on the shapes, absorbency of light and reflections these works stated.

These works of art had something to say, there was not a whisper of indication saying otherwise.

People were in awe.

I felt inspired by his audacity.

It's funny to see how certain exhibits will effect your thought process and your maturity as an artist. In every exhibit I walk around an ask myself the questions..

"How was this curated, how did the work interact with the space"

"How did the exhibit make me FEEL?"

"What elements and adjectives would I use to describe what I saw, and is that what the artist had in mind?"

"How would I use this space to best exhibit my work and what am I trying to say?"

After all, you are only as good as your word.

My mother and my best friend.

I still have not processed all that I have learned from this exhibit. But here we are, two days later and I can't stop thinking about it/yapping about it.

That must be saying something.

If you are in the Boston area, do yourself a favor and go get inspired.

Hello Friends!

Writing to you with some great news.

Inspiration Board.

I wanted to take a moment to recognize something wonderful. I think we can spend so much time in our lives worrying, being sad, ungrateful, or just plain ol' lost. So, I decided to surround myself with love. Around my work area at home, I covered the walls with things that just filled me with love. It also has a certain feeling of gratitude, peppered with a strong sense of blissful nostalgia. I live a beautiful, fortunate and colorful life, and I feel like this space reflects those feelings. Everyday, I look at these images to remind myself of my goals, my support system, past memories and future inspiration. I think it is important for every artist to have an inspirational space such as this. It really refocuses you and establishes an energy that you want to create in. Your creative space is very important, so really take the time to make it everything you want and more. Thanks for reading.

Hello friends.

How I have missed you very much. I have also greatly missed documenting my life as an artist day to day. Sometimes is tough to just take a minute for yourself and slow down.

I had hoped this chaotic month would end on a good note. And I can honestly say it has, looking back on June.

All in the month of June, since we last spoke, I have..

Moved to a new city and into a new apartment for the first time in my life.

Started a brand new job (the first out of college) and also learning a completely new and exciting industry. Visual Merchandising.

Trying to figure out a new city, new environment and how the hell to get from here to there.

Being financially independent for the first time in my life.

Actively keeping a dream journal (first time I've ever just stopped talking about wanting to do it and finally documenting.)

Still keeping up with my drawing skills and doodling in a sketch book at work for notes and any spare minute I have..

And most importantly, where and how to find the time to create my own art.

After having almost three weeks under my belt at my new job, I found out today I will be transfered from the Natick store to the Boston store. Right in Copley Place.

I am so excited.

I am learning so much about design and visual merchandising, it is just boggling my mind.

I feel like in this lifetime, I have this insatiable desire to learn as much as I can about art and design. I want to learn it all.

This job is not only serving as a vehicle to really teach me the basics about visuals, but also has really heightened my creativity in a whole new way.

I can't walk into a store or a space without analyzing it. The colors, shapes, heights, textures, smells, negative space, interaction, depth.. I could go on and on. I feel like I am seeing it all, and in a very fast and almost frantic way.

My mind is just eating it all up.

I am a firm believer in the fact that every experience you have or walk away from, gives you the tools you will need for the bigger picture.

Everything does happen for a reason, and it's amazing to see how what you learn and what "tools" you acquire, can be applied to life later on down the line.

I felt like today was a big day for me, I felt like I was taking another step towards my destiny.

Syracuse Poster Project Winner, A Year Later.

So it's been a year since the Syracuse 2009 Poster Project.

For all of you newer friends, I completed my BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University.

One of the requirements senior year was to enter the Syracuse Poster Project that was intended to promote local establishments, artists and poets.

The assignment was to pick a Haiku out of a box (written by a local poet, about a local establishment), and create an original 11x17 illustration of the written words.

Many entered, but the winners were selected to get their images blown up to kiosk size and displayed throughout all of downtown Syracuse.

My Haiku read,

"At Alto Cinco, Do as the bartender says, Pinot Grigio"

(Alto Cinco was a local Mexican Restaurant in Syracuse that had a great wine selection).

Here was the final illustration.

The boarder pattern was an imitation of the tin ceilings they had, accompanied by their wonderful chips.

The reason I am bringing up an accomplishment from over a year ago, was because I heard from them today.

They said out of all of the posters chosen to be sold over the past year, mine sold the most copies.

Also I wanted to give both Roger DeMuth (a mentor and teacher of mine) and James Emmons some publicity about their project.

Every year Roger and James put together a great collection of posters to promote the arts throughout the Syracuse area, I wish there were more people like them.

Tape Jewelry IN PROGRESS!

So here she is!

Little by little I have been plugging away on this project, and boy she hasn't been an easy nut to crack. I have problem solved, redesigned, tested and applied these rolls in so many ways... and finally I'm getting somewhere!

So first HUGE problem... getting the tape to a functional size for wearing purposes. So that means that they need to be cut. I tried initially by hand but that was the most awful experience I have had with tape so far.

So I moved onto the big boys, A SAW. While my parents looked on with fear and confusion as to why their accident prone daughter was using a band saw, I assured them that everything would be fine.

Secretly, being scared out of my mind to use this monster, I just started cutting away.

Here is the army of tape waiting to be cut, to then be worn by you!

Phew. Just got dizzy looking at them all.

Another fun tape shot (I am just in love with the shadows).

The next big issue was, now that they were the right size... how do you make them functional and reliable for everyday use. Considerations to take into mind are wear and tear, water resistant, all that good stuff.

If I am going to sell a product I want to 100% ensure it's quality.

So I started researching everywhere.

Then came the resin cups.

By using resin cups, I could cut the tape to size, glue it inside of these functional findings for jewelry, to later treat for wear and tear.

Here they are in the process of cutting and fitting.

And here is a close up of the jewelry in progress (still haven't been treated to make wearable). SO EXCITING!

I am really, really trying to get these together for my next show July 3rd in Newport, Rhode Island... but it's going to be a stretch.

In other news, I just got a job!

I will be working in the Natick Mall in Massachusetts for Neiman Marcus. I will be working on a team in store for their visual department.

I am so excited.

But with this new responsibility, comes relocating, dedicating 40 hours a week and still trying to pursue my dream.

I know I can do it. I find I get the best ideas when in the middle of chaos.

After all, "from chaos, comes clarity."

SO please excuse me in the next few weeks if I am not totally on top of updating all of you as to the most current of my work. As you can see, life is going to get pretty crazy.

But, crazy in a great way.

Suitcase Photography Finished Business Card.

So about a month ago a dear friend of mine, Ashley Knowles, AMAZING photographer approached me about doing a business card for her.

So excited, I obviously accepted the assignment.

About a month ago, you saw the first sketches after our discussion of what she wanted...

but here is a refresher.

So last week, we met in person. After many giggles and reminiscing about childhood stories, we got down to business.

Ashley liked example three the best, the graphic and also the font.

I applauded Ashley for wanting a graphic for her business vs. a photograph, because that in and of itself will make her stand out in her industry.

We spoke about all of the many subtleties of her card, and the image she wanted to portray to her customers. Here are the many notes we took..

I think that this is important to include in my blog/process of this assignment because I really want to give people a feel of what exactly goes into branding a client. Every subtlety of a card is important.

So after our meeting, I created the final.

PHEW! Totally different huh? Well it was really great to be able to meet with Ashley and get a MUCH better idea of what she wanted. She wanted a very vintage travel look to her work (I had a blast finding the old travel stickers) and she wanted more personality to the suitcase. Which I totally agreed with.

For invoices, she also needed a letterhead..

Once I established the suitcase, it was very easy for me to make the card a cohesive brand/idea with the coffee stains, leather and font. I had a blast.

And she loved it!

What a rewarding assignment for me to complete for such an amazing young woman.

Westerly Sun Write Up.

Just when I thought that last weekend couldn't get any better, I got a large write up in the Westerly Sun. Here is a spread that I created for my press kit, but as you can see from the highlighted areas the interview they had with me.

It was a huge honor to receive this much space in the total article considering there were over a hundred vendors and I was of five artists chosen to spot light.

Also, on the top left is a painter named Mike Bryce. Here you can see some of his gorgeous glowing images he shares with the world. Both Mike and I were Illustration majors from Syracuse University following our passions in Little Rhody.

Westerly Art Festival May 29th and 30th.

What an amazing weekend.

The Virtu Westerly Art Festival was held this past memorial day weekend in Wilcox Park, Westerly RI. Having hundreds of attendee's, I met so many amazing people, supporters and now tape enthusiasts!

While tape was definitely the attention getter, it was a great way to get people into my space to enjoy the rest of the whimsical creations that were just waiting to be discovered.

As you can see from the display, I had my two biggest price points out front to draw attention. I wish I had a hidden camera on the easel that held them because it was so funny for me to watch people's reactions as they discovered that these creations were indeed made from rolled masking tape.

Last week before the show, I had a very productive week creating ten new pieces for this show. Only two remain.

I am glad I have been keeping up with my antiquing or as some of my loved ones call it, "crap collecting" because all of my antique boxes were the first things to sell.

I can understand why the customers appreciate them the most, but the trend I noticed was the reaction that these pieces were giving.

Many customers had stories of what my work reminds them of. Like a grandmother that used to have boxes like this to hold their favorite dominos as a child, or a suitcase that reminded them of a trip they took as an adolescent, etc.

The thing I've discovered about using old things and giving them a chance to live again is that it gives customers a strong sense of nostalgia.

Who would of thought.

After this show especially, I discovered that because of the versatility of my work, it really could draw the attention of any gender and any age. This is a huge advantage.

Also because of the certain personality and charm I try to create all of my art with, it reminds customers of people that they love. I hear all the time "Oh, I wish my daughter was here to see this, she would love it" or "Oh, this reminds me so much of John, it would be perfect for a housewarming gift". I could go on and on.

Relation is a huge selling point of my work. Whether its how I relate to the customer, or how my work does... I feel as if I now have a following of Lucchiola lovers.

And I couldn't be happier.

Wonderful to have met all of you this weekend, and keep checking in I'm always doing something new and exciting :)

Providence Monthly Published Illustration.

I think one of the greatest things about Illustration is being able to see something you created and executed, applied to text and have them compliment one another.

Anyone can draw something in a sketch book, but illustration is an interpretation of a body of text and the understanding of it's application.

I look forward to working with Providence Monthly again in the near future. This illustration can be found in their June 2010 edition.

Tomorrow Wilcox Park!

Hello!

Phew. So tomorrow is Wilcox Park, Westerly Rhode Island from 10am-5pm

Saturday and Sunday.

Went to set up the tent and such this afternoon and Wilcox Park is gorgeous.

Should be an amazing place to have a show.

So for some reason tonight I have more anxiety than I usually do before a show.

When I gave it more thought, I realized it was because this is the first real ART show I will be a part of.

All of the other venues I have shown my work have been open markets with all sorts of things, not "art buyers".

When I was unloading my car today I was looking around and seeing watercolorists, oil painters... basically super established VERY traditional/conservative artists.

As you know from following my blog, knowing me as a person or even seeing my work on my website... nothing about me fits that description.

So this is how I am choosing to look at it.

I am entering the show tomorrow with ten new pieces, all of which I created this week (in addition to my other body of work).

Because of this crazy productivity, I officially have no middle finger print.

But I am going to be myself, put my best foot forward, and hope that people are looking for something new.

God knows I've never seen someone roll tape like I do.

I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow, and for now all I can do is believe in myself and just breathe.

Easier said than done.

Up and going by 6 am tomorrow, if you come by tomorrow... coffee's are more than welcome.

Show Tomorrow in Providence RI.

Hello, hello!

Show tomorrow 10 am-4 pm at Lippitt Park on the East Side of Providence.

Should be a great time, it's supposed to be 75 degrees and sunny.

Couldn't ask for a better day!

So for each show, I want to try to introduce a new product each and see how it goes.

This week I am introducing four 11x17 inch color prints.

Here are the images.

I produced five prints of each example to see the popularity of the images.

My degree was in illustration from Syracuse University and I would like to pursue illustration further, so maybe the sales tomorrow would influence me to do so.

As you can see the reoccurring theme of girls with flowing hair.

These moments are when my soul is happiest and a constant subject of interest, especially the movement and stylization of hair.

Nothing beats staring into the Atlantic Ocean and feeling the wind through your hair.

This is how I would like to be remembered, the girl with the flowing hair.

Work in Progress.

Looked back on some of my previous work I have posted and realized I have never put up a work in progress with my tape.

At my last show I had some inquiries about my larger pieces contained by the antique typographer drawers. They are beautiful focal pieces of a room, especially over a mantle (with that extreme light source, to die for!) While I love doing my tape in all shapes and sizes, the larger more expensive price points I have the most fun with.

I still have some work to do, with some smaller rolls to create the illusion of denser areas. Also to really give a strong feeling of motion and weight.

I was laughing to myself as I was doing this project today with the intentions of documenting it, because of my difficulty focusing on ANYTHING ELSE once I begin a project.

As I laid the first five rolls down I had to make a conscious effort to keep stopping and taking a picture of my progression. There is something about these forms, these shadows and the attention to space and distribution that is so attractive to me I just get lost in the piece.

Probably another few hours left in her until completion.

How exciting!!

After my SOWA show last weekend, the Cloth Paper Scissors magazine contacted me about some publicity.

They loved with they saw, and they would love to do an article about me and my artwork in their "On the Radar" Section for their September/October Issue.

This is their May/June issue.

Cloth Paper Scissors is sold in all major craft stores such as Michaels, JoAnne fabrics and AC Moore as well as online.

Final Submitted Providence Monthly Illustration.

So here is the final submitted illustration.

Just sent in the final and also asked for a contact about some publicity for my summer shows. I'm excited to hear back and also for the possibility of more illustrations in the future.

Illustration for Providence Monthly.

In the state of Rhode Island, we are lucky enough to have a few free publications that are disbursed throughout the state to promote all local establishments/businesses/artists, all of the above.

I had been sending my stuff to the Providence Monthly publication, along with SO Rhode Island Magazine hoping to get some work.

My persistence finally paid off.

The illustration is for the rebirth of tinctures and bitters (popular additions to alcoholic beverages both for favor and medicinal purposes during the prohibition), and it's recent popularity. While the illustration is only 4x5 inches in their next edition, I consider it a success and an act of fate.

Although the sketch is nothing glamourous, I hope that this experience leads to further jobs with these wonderful publications.

The final color version is due tomorrow at 5PM. If I'm feeling gutsy enough, I might suggest the idea of covering my shows to the assistant art director. Publicity, publicity, publicity! Wish me luck!

A Glimpse of SOWA May 15th, 16th.

What a great weekend.

I'm exhausted, but now a day removed from the chaos, I can say it was truly wonderful.

Thank you to all of my friends and family that came to support, and thank you to all of my new friends I was blessed enough to meet this weekend.

Some Show Preparations.

After I got accepted to my summer shows, I notice on every application the EMPHASIS on weights for your tent. You are not allowed to even set up or participate in the show unless you have a 40 lbs weight attached to each leg of your tent.

Before I attended my first weekend, I thought this rule was annoying and inconvenient. I have to carry around an extra 160 lbs to all of my shows? Lame.

But then came the wind.

At the SOWA show this weekend, the wind was so tough, I was so appreciative of the fact that they made you build weights. The way the tents are built, they would act exactly like a kite without the weights. I guess last year in Providence, before this rule was enforced, someone's tent actually punched through a windshield of a car after a strong gust of wind.

As you can see, the directions were to fill PVC piping with concrete and then attach hardware to make them portable and hang-able.

Below are two chemicals that were used to both prime and bond the cap to the piping so that the concrete wouldn't affect the binding.

I'm sure many of you have never seen these bottles, because neither have I. Evan my boyfriend was the mastermind behind this operation, and apparently he had made enough potato guns in his lifetime to know exactly how to build and use these chemicals. Silly.

Here is the hardware used on top to attach to the tents. Once the cement was poured, these were hammered down around the top and bonded into place.

The smaller image is once they were filled, capped and bonded. And to the larger image are all four completed and flipped upside down to ensure the drying of the cement.

Glad that was over with, and REALLY glad I had them during the show. Thanks Evan.

PHEW!

Now THAT was a crazy week.

Sorry I've been so out of touch, but between preparing, cutting, gluing, packing, stubbing, rolling and all the other various things I do, I just had no time to post these amazing pictures.

It's truly wonderful for me to be able to see all of this product that was completed for you, and know that I loved every minute of it. I love what I do.

First are sets of 5 of some of the inventory of flowers I created for the show.

I have about 30 remaining from the existing 40, and I am going to post them on Etsy later today.

They are created with vintage buttons hand selected from local antique dealers in the Rhode Island area. So happy I found a use for all those buttons I had been collecting over the years, it was getting a little ridiculous!

Next was my snowflake series.

On the back of each box I had this inscription describing the purpose of this 15 piece idea.

"Scientist W.A Bentley, who dedicated his life to discover a way to take pictures of solitary snowflakes before melting, inspired this 15 piece series. Over decades of study, he did indeed prove that there are no two snowflakes alike.

In this series, I wanted to show the versatility of one roll of tape, similar to the complexity of the snowflakes. Each box is filled with a tape sculpture that is unique and one of a kind,

just like you."

Practice Set up for NEXT WEEK!

Step One:

Finally putting together all of the junk I have been collecting the past month to see what I have, and what I need.

As you can see, I have a lot of very unique pieces to display my work which I really believe will set me apart from a lot of other vendors during my shows.

One of the biggest short comings I saw while observing other vendors throughout the years was the display. I understand the concept of "less is more" but sometimes the barren tables and minimalist displays just appear lazy and boring. This is every artists chance to show personality not only in their handmade products, but also what surrounds them. You have to remember to just have some fun with it!

Below are the bare bones of the set up (minus the car in the background of course).

At first when I began today I only had three tables, but I thought there wasn't enough room for a functional space. Now with the additional table, it not only provides the customers with more room to explore and breathe, but also more room for me to keep an eye on what is going on in my space. From experience, there is nothing worse than having someone breathing down your neck while you are trying to observe someone's creations! (I'm a big fan and acknowledger of personal space). Also if you can see to the far left and right of the tables, there is about a foot of moving space for me and my workers to be able to move to further interact with customers.

Although not displayed on today's post, on both right and left far walls is where the fireflies will hang out during the shows. They will be attached to a clothes line by clothes pins, vary in size and heights, and hopefully by attaching them this way will be easy to put them up and down.

WORD TO THE WISE:

Always use the stick grip under your tablecloths when setting up your display.

Even though I have never done a show before, I can only imagine with the interaction of customers bumping, pushing and pulling on the cloth accidentally what can happen to the product. Also the element of the weather, you never know if the wind is going to be your friend of foe. A small precaution I suppose.

Step 2: Putting down the cloth and display elements.

This part of my journey was when I finally started to see everything come together. It was so wonderful to see everything interacting with one another and at the same time, working! As you can see I wanted to add a lot of height over to the right hand side with the planter because on the opposite side is where I will be working the register.

I also thought it would be smart to place my greeting card holder right by the register for a last minute addition to any purchase, also my promotional items. I'm going to offer the deal if you buy three fireflies you get a greeting card free, if you like the greeting card all on it's own they will run $5 a piece.

"AHHH! Oh my goodness! Here it is!!"

(Me screaming and running around the driveway, affirming all watching family members at that moment I had just lost my mind.)

What a relief. Everything is seeming to come together. Everything seems like it works, looks good together and most importantly, I believe it is a great reflection of who I am and what I do.

Boo-yah.

What a day.

After it was all set up, I took a moment for myself.

What a journey this has been for me. Sometimes we all move too fast, and focus on everything we don't do and our many short comings (guilty).

But if my whole logo and brand of my company is the spread the light and to lighten up, I decided to sit and just observe something beautiful that I created.

What a gift. What a blessing.

Such a wonderful feeling.

As I sat, I decided to sketch how I saw my display..

Tape Sculptures, The Fabric Series.

Tape, Tape and MORE tape.

For all of you wondering out there, no I no longer have finger prints. They have officially been rolled off.

So here are my most recent explorations of tape.

Below was a very strong bee hive influence, using a thinner tape that usual.

3/4 of an inch vs. and inch.

It created much smaller, honey comb like rolls.

It will be sold at the shows for $70.

Next are two antique box explorations I completed this week. By always traveling to local consignment and antique stores, I'm always coming across interesting shapes to work inside of. I like the one to the right, I feel like the motif was successful and I plan to further that concept in other boxes. They both will run $40 a piece.

And below are my pride and joys. The Fabric Series.

Only 8 completed so far, but they are floating tape sculptures boosted on top of vintage fabrics to add a small flare of color to these monochromatic beauties.

They are truly stunning in person and they will be on sale at my upcoming shows.

They will run $60 a piece.

Been slacking on keeping this up to date. Now especially because my first show is MAY 15TH!!! I really have to get production moving full swing. I feel like I am in good shape but because I have never had a show before, I have no idea what position is "in good shape".

Daily April 21, 2010 Doodle.

Now that I've graduated college, I have such a hard time finding a minute to do my daily sketch in my sketchbook.

It used to be obsessive.

At school I used to finish a sketchbook front to back in a month tops.

THAT's a lot of doodles.

I'm really going to make a strong effort to keep up the hard work with it, they are the most important possessions I own. Some people find it easier to write their feelings and where they are in their lives, it was always just much easier for me to draw it.

And with ideas, I need to sit on projects for days. Drawing something over and over until it clicks. The longer you problem solve, the more successful the finished product.

Here is a sketch I did for fun on Wednesday. This is what I did during the day.

I really missed subconscious free hand, unplanned drawing. It's a great exercise to just start with an object and just go with it. The final product will always amaze you. Because I've been so serious about getting ready for my shows (FIRST ONE MAY 15TH and 16th), I really need to find time to just do art for arts sake.

But on a more professional level, here are some show related illustrations I've been doodling away on.

Here is the line work for some of the hand drawn illustrations I am producing for my shows. I really want the cohesive appearance of my booth to have a hand drawn, hand created and personal feel to it. Every sign will be hand drawn and digitally colored. Then they will be placed inside of some funky fresh frames I have found on my journeys, to show consumers the cost of the products.

Phew.

It's been awhile.

This past week has been absolutely crazy! It was my birthday on the 16th and I have been going non stop.

But now it's back to work, because I officially have less than a month until my first show.

Just realized that and had a mini panic attack, but to my own defense I feel like everything is finally coming together. Busy, busy bee!

So a very talented photographer friend of mine contacted me about having a business card designed for her. Her blog is called Suitcase Photography, and I really love her sense of style and perspective.

Here are the three preliminary sketches I whipped up for her to see what direction she wanted to move in from there.

I'm excited to hear back about what she thinks about these quick icons.

I personally like the third best, especially for Ashley. Knowing the person I am designing for is truly a great advantage, and I feel as if this beautiful, elegant and understated image is very fitting for Ashley. Check out what she does, truly a beautiful young woman.

Just wanted you to know, you light up my life. But, really though.

With the wonderful little fireflies that were finished last week, I knew they needed some accompaniment.

So what else but matching stationery, of course!

Just ordered 30 to see how they sell at my first shows. I'm thinking that I can do a deal with them maybe, $5 a card or buy two bugs and get a card for free... still trying to figure that out.

I'm a little bummed I had to keep the zazzle logo on the back of the card, but then again I got to put my logo on there too, so no big.

ALSO- while antiquing today, found the most perfect stand to put my cards in during the show. It's amazing once you put something out there in the universe that is needed, it presents itself, but in this case it was within a half an hour span! I'm choosing to believe that when you are on the right path or connected to a higher power, things fall into place.

It's creeping me out how all of this is falling into place, and I'm actually quite happy I am documenting my journey. I have been sitting on this concept of "Lucchiola" and my endless obsession with staying in the light, it's amazing to me that it's finally coming to fruition.

I'm going to keep plugging, and keep faith in what I am doing. Because after all, if I don't believe in myself than who will?
